Resurrecting dead iPAQ 5550 (Pagina 2)
I left my iPAQ uncharged so long the battery went to zero volts and would not even recharge. For a whole week I tried all the soft/hard resets and battery removal tricks on various forums but the thing stayed dead. Then it occurred to me to try connecting a Sync n' Charge USB cable (does away with the cradle) to the iPAQ and my desktop pc instead, as the USB bus supplies just enough different voltage/current that it might wake up the battery. And it did! plug in, a quick Reset and it powered up and began charging normally. If you have this weird syndrome, give this a try, these Sync n' Charge USB cables are very cheap and very useful anyway. |
great stuff fatzo, ressurected my H5550 after 3 weeks under garbage in the back of my car.. registered here to thank you... so THANKS!!! |
I too am having the problem of resurrecting my dead iPAQ 5555 and recently purchased a new Lion battery from Pocket PC techs. But when I replaced the battery it still was dead, I left it plugged in to the AC adapter over night but I noticed this morning, that the LED was not blinking as it should be. So I then tried what was recommended on the forum, all except for using the USB cable, as I don''t have one. I used the stock cable that can be de-attached from the cradle. Still nothing. |
LAst time my IPAQ died I recharged as normal using the USB cable. Now being an impatient fellow I reloaded all the software whilst waiting for the battery to charge. Next thing the IPAQ crashed DEAD , soft reset, nothing, hard reset, nothing took battery out for ages, nothing. It has now been dead for months. HAS anyone got sugestions of what to do, or do I just give up on this stupid machine? |
First of all I wish to everybody a Happy New Year! Sorry for reviving this old post, but I have an HP iPAQ H5550 in my hands (a colleague of mine gave it to me from the office) and I was trying to revive the damn thing and still nothing. I tried every technique described here and all I'm getting is the iPAQ showing it has 100% both main and backup battery (the orange light is always turned on, it's not blinking showing that the unit is charging). When I remove the power cable or the cradle the device just shuts down even though it shows that both batteries are 100% charged (from Settings->Power) and I can't understand what's going on... Is this a dead battery and I should buy a new one? Normal and Hard Reset doesn't help, as I used both techinques 100 times with no result whatsoever... Any thoughts? |
Try and borrow a battery rather than spending out on one. Pete (I need JD) Graham ************** Damn you! Use forum search!!. |
Excellent advice, thanks. I had the same problem. My original battery would not charge with the PDA in the cradle. The charging light would flash. I have two HP5550's. On one of them the battery showed as 0%, on the other as 100%, but as soon as the PDA was removed the PDA's died. I read your post, and as I did not have a USB Sync/Charge cable I tried using the small HP power adapter plugged straight into the HP charger. This has the added advantage of having the reset accessible. I connected one of the PDA's (the one which showed the battery as having 100% charge) and pressed the reset button. Initially there was no change, but after a few minutes the PDA power meter changed from showing 100% and showed the battery at 0%, but re-charging. After about 20 minutes the battery indicator began to rise. I left the PDA charging for 16 hours and after that all was fine. I had already ordered two new batteries. When they arrived I tried one in the PDA which had originally shown my suspect battery to be at 0%. On removal from the cradle the PDA shut down immediately. The new battery showed 0%, but even after 5 hours there was no change when the PDA was in the cradle, despite the charging light flashing. So I tried the other new battery, same result. I tried in two different cradles. Once again I tried the power adapter connected to the HP charger. After about 20 minutes both new batteries quickly charged to 100%, and the PDA worked out of the cradle. The odd charging behaviour of the 5550 is well documented on the Net, with lots of people experiencing it and putting forward suggestions, but yours is the only one which seems to work. It appears the cradle has electronics that control the charge rate, which under normal circumstances provides a very small 'trickle' charge. This is usually sufficient, but if for some reason the battery charge falls below a certain level, the cradle does not give enough power to kick-start it. In addition the PDA itself often has a nervous breakdown and reports the battery state incorrectly, and is reluctant to charge the battery correctly. So in a nutshell, using the HP power adaptor connected to the HP power supply for charging certainly worked for me. I am not sure if pressing the reset buton had any effectt on this, but I did do this on each occasion. Had I not had 2 PDA's to try it would be very easy to assume the PDA had developed a fault, particularly when new batteries would not charge. This method is not going to resurrect a really dead battery, but worth trying as the combined problems of the PDA giving false readings when dealing with uncharged batteries, and the cradle electronics not being able to cope, can mean you still have a PDA / battery that can be brought back to life. Thanks again for the original tip. |
Thanks so much for the suggestions about using Synch and Charge USB cable. I don't have one of those but I do have an hp 'Emergency Charger' that uses a 9V battery. My iPAQ had been off for some time and none of the usual tricks worked. I plugged in the charger for a minute or so, then plugged in the regular charger (without the cradle) and the unit started charging! Thanks to those who pointed me int the right direction. |
